Totti: 'Roma not a bonbon'

Francesco Totti gloated that Barcelona “seemed pretty happy” to be paired with Roma in the Champions League quarter-final and looks forward to Liverpool.

The Giallorossi completed a seemingly impossible comeback from a 4-1 first leg defeat to crush the Blaugrana 3-0 at the Olimpico.

“Everyone assumed we were done for and almost considered the second leg a futile exercise,” smiled Totti on tonight’s episode of television show Amici.

“When the draw was made, Barcelona seemed pretty happy to have picked us, and their local papers even called us a ‘bonbon.’ The first leg went the way 90 per cent of people expected, but fortunately these ties are played over 180 minutes.

“Every time I see the video clips of that night, I get goosebumps. It was a memorable match.”

The semi-final will be against Liverpool and it’s the first time these sides have met since the 1984 European Cup Final, which the Reds won on penalties.

“Football is wonderful because it allows you another opportunity. This time, I am quite sad it’s a two-legged affair and not a one-off game.”

Totti retired last year at the age of 40, but spoke with bitterness about his final two seasons under Luciano Spalletti.

“Over the last two years, I wasn’t just on the bench, I had my own cushion. I had to work twice as hard to convince the Coach, but I want to pass from negative things to something more positive.”
