Bonucci: 'I wasn't going to celebrate'

Milan captain Leonardo Bonucci reveals he wasn’t going to celebrate against his former team until the Juventus Stadium crowd insulted him.

The former Bianconeri hero was jeered and insulted by the crowd every time he touched the ball on his first trip back to Turin since the summer transfer.

It seemed almost inevitable then that he would score the goal that ended Juve’s 959-minute Serie A clean sheet, even if Milan eventually lost 3-1.

“It was certainly an emotional occasion. I thought the welcome was 50-50, they preferred to jeer me and I respect that, but I think I gave a great deal to Juventus and in seven years played more than anyone,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia and Mediaset Premium.

“I have no rancour towards the fans, as they have the right to do what they see fit. It was an intense and emotional match. I wasn’t planning on celebrating my goal, but the jeers made up my mind.

“I did have a joke with my former teammates about the unbeaten run, because I was in the side when Juventus set the record of 979 minutes unbeaten.”

Milan must now beat Inter in Wednesday’s rescheduled Derby della Madonnina to stay in the hunt for a Champions League spot.

“We have many young players in the squad and need nights like this to grow. Of course, if Hakan Calhanoglu’s shot had gone in off the crossbar, then we’d be talking about a different match. Juve have players like Juan Cuadrado and Douglas Costa who can come off the bench and change a game.

“At Milan we have created a mix of young and not so young, but to make the step up we need top players who can improve the quality level.”
